What Is General Dentistry?
General dentistry addresses ongoing oral healthcare needs. You can think of your general dentist as your primary dental healthcare provider. They can perform most services in-house but may refer you to a specialist in particular cases. If you have any questions or concerns about your oral health, bring them up with your general dentist first.
Benefits of General Dentistry
Protect Your Oral Health
Regular cleanings, X-rays, and exams allow your dentist to track your oral health and prevent future problems. Early diagnosis helps to make treatment quicker and more efficient, preserving your teeth for long, useful life.
Boost Your Overall Health
Researchers link poor oral health to many systemic issues, including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and preterm birth.
Provide Home Care Instruction
General dentists help their patients learn to care for their teeth at home properly. Dentists and their assistants provide brushing and flossing techniques and inspiration to create healthy habits.
Prevent Gum Disease
Gum disease can endanger your teeth when it is left unchecked. Regular cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup, keeping gums healthy for years. Periodontal procedures can slow the progress of gum disease.
Prevent Tooth Decay
Tooth decay affects patients of all ages. Decay can eventually lead to tooth loss. Patients receiving twice-annual cleanings and proper home care instructions are less likely to exhibit tooth decay.
Comprehensive Evaluation / Oral Examination
Twice a year, the dentist will perform a comprehensive oral exam. They will check for signs of oral cancer and other abnormalities in the head, mouth, and neck.
Dental Cleaning
We recommend dental cleanings every six months for the best results. Cleanings remove plaque and tartar, lowering your chance of developing gum disease and tooth decay.
Dental Sealants
Made of a safe resin material, dental sealants are applied to the surfaces of teeth (commonly permanent molars) to prevent cavities. Once the teeth are prepared, the sealant is painted directly onto the chewing surface of each tooth and then hardens. The sealant material fills in the crevices of a tooth and “seals” off the tooth from cavity-causing agents like food and plaque. Sealants are applied in one visit.
Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride is a natural substance that helps strengthen teeth and prevent decay. Fluoride treatments are administered at this office as an important component of dental treatment. The fluoride is applied to the teeth in a gel, foam, or varnish form.
Custom Oral Appliances
Our office can fabricate custom oral appliances that can protect your teeth and gums during sports, alleviate sleep apnea symptoms to provide an open airway while you sleep, or relieve stress on the temporomandibular joint caused by clenching or grinding of the teeth.
Scaling and Root Planing
Root Canal Treatment
Root canals are most often necessary when decay has reached the nerve of the tooth or the tooth has become infected. When root canal therapy is performed, infected or inflamed pulp is removed from the tooth chamber. The inside of the tooth is then cleaned and disinfected before being filled and sealed to limit the possibility of future infection. Soon after the root canal is performed, the tooth is restored with a dental crown or filling to protect the tooth and restore normal tooth function.
Extractions
If a general dentist cannot save a tooth, sometimes they must extract it. We provide quick, gentle extractions.
Digital X-Rays
Digital X-rays provide much more detail than traditional film X-rays while using less radiation. It is easy to share these images with the patient, explaining diagnoses and allowing the patient to see the results of their oral care habits.
Fillings
We offer composite and metal fillings. Composite fillings are tooth-colored and blend in with your teeth shade. Metal fillings are safe, robust, and appropriate for larger cavities in certain circumstances.
Additional Procedures Offered
Cosmetic Dentistry
We provide cosmetic dental services including teeth whitening, veneers, and Invisalign®.
Restorative Dentistry
We offer crowns, bridges, and dentures to help restore the full function of your teeth and occlusion.
