How Do Dental Implants Work?

If you have missing teeth, you have probably wondered what your options are for restoring your smile. One popular option that you likely have heard about is dental implants. But how do dental implants work? How successful are they? Read on to learn more.

What is a Dental Implant?

Contrary to popular belief, a dental implant isn’t a tooth. Rather, it is a prosthesis that replaces missing teeth. A dental implant is a small titanium post/fixture that a trained dental provider surgically inserts into the jawbone.

After several months of healing, which provides time for the jawbone to integrate with the implant, which can vary between patients, the provider usually places what’s called an abutment to the implant. Then, they will affix a single crown (cap), a fixed bridge, a partial denture, or a full denture to the abutment itself.

As such, dental implants or the “implant tooth” consists of three separate parts working together; dental implant itself, the abutment, and the artificial tooth. Dental implants look and function like natural teeth, which is one reason why so many patients choose them to replace their missing teeth.

Will My Dental Implants Last?

Unlike natural teeth, dental implants aren’t susceptible to dental diseases such as decay. But your gum health is imperative to long-term implant success. A commitment to meticulous care by the patient and routine professional cleanings and check-ups are necessary for dental implants to last a long time. Since each dental implant patient is different, success rates rely on diagnosis and planning, medical history, how well the patient cares for their implants, if they were a good candidate for dental implants from the start, and a variety of other factors.

For a healthy implant patient with good oral hygiene and overall health, dental implants are predictably successful, with reported success rates of at least 90-95 percent.

Frequently Asked Questions about Dental Implants

Can Dentures Be Made into Implants?

Dentures can’t be “made into implants.” Dental implants are simply metal screws placed into the jawbone to help anchor and support a form of artificial teeth such as dentures. You may be able to have implants placed underneath your existing set of dentures to help stabilize and support them. However, this is only an option if the current dentures are otherwise in excellent condition.

What if I Want "Metal-Free" Implants?

Unfortunately, “metal-free” implants don’t exist. Nearly all materials used for replacing teeth have some metal ions in them. Dental implants are crafted from titanium alloy (similar to hip, shoulder, and implants). This material is highly biocompatible, making a titanium allergy extremely rare. Currently, there are no established alternatives to titanium dental implants.
